Deputy Executive Director

Update as of March 31, 2026: We are no longer accepting applications for this position.

About OpenSSL Foundation

OpenSSL Foundation builds data privacy and security tools that are the backbone of internet protection, quietly safeguarding millions of users. Through our work on the OpenSSL Library, we help build a safer internet — one that serves the public interest and upholds privacy and security as foundational rights.

Founded in the 1990s, the OpenSSL Library was one of the first open source cryptography toolkits to enable secure and private online connections. It was quickly adopted by software developers around the world and continues to be one of the most trusted and widely used open source cryptography libraries available today.

OpenSSL Foundation manages the OpenSSL Library co-equally with OpenSSL Corporation. The two organizations are separate and independent, but we collaborate closely on matters related to the Library and its community of users. The Foundation, Corporation, and other players in the OpenSSL ecosystem all subscribe to a shared, overarching OpenSSL Mission, while the Foundation’s mission statement expresses our unique role within this larger ecosystem.

OpenSSL Foundation is a Delaware-registered taxable nonprofit corporation but not a 501c3. The Foundation is fiscally sponsored by the mission-aligned 501c3 organization Software in the Public Interest, through which we conduct some of our fundraising efforts.

We are a fully remote organization with no physical offices. The current team of eight people is located across five countries. The organization is led by a five-person management team that meets weekly and uses consensus-based decision making. This position is a member of the management team and reports to the Executive Director.

We conduct all of our work in the English language. Given the nature of this position, we strongly prefer the candidate be based in the United States. Exceptional candidates outside of the US will also be considered.

  • Design and produce a variety of print materials, such as the annual report, conference booth backdrops, and event swag, working with external designers as needed.
